Catching up

My laptop went kaput (it has some sort of virus) and work has been busy so my blog posts fell by the wayside. But I'm back to catch-up a bit.

Thursday during lunch I did get a lunchtime treadmill walking workout in and dabbled in retracking my Weight Watchers points but that only lasted for the day. Tracking points is time-consuming for me and then when you have a bad day points-wise (like I did on Friday night when I ate a blue cheese bacon burger with fries) - the points stay with you all week when you track with WW - which just doesn't do much to motivate me at all. I don't have a problem seeing my bad day, owning it and then moving on from it - but I hate being stuck looking at it until my points reset weekly. My WW billing cycle ends Friday so I'm not going to renew for May - I'll use Sparkpeople's FREE calorie tracking sight instead.

I didn't get any workouts in over the weekend and I ate and drank awful. Yes, my fitting is a week from tomorrow. The good thing is - I haven't GAINED any weight and I do still have 75 days until the actual wedding so although the dress may need no alterations I still have time to tone up and slim down just a lil bit!

This week I will have to adjust some workouts. I have a conference at work to go to today - so no lunchtime treadmill workout and then on Thursday I'm meeting an old friend for lunch - so no lunchtime workout then. I need to catch back-up on my restart of P90X and those are such long workouts I really need to schedule the time to get them in this week!

Homework got in the way

Yep - it's true - I didn't get in my evening P90X workout last night because I was up late helping the kids with their math homework. That almost falls along the lines of "my dog ate my homework". It is a weak excuse and I could have planned better by getting it done in the morning but I'm not going to beat myself up about it because I did get in a lunchtime treadmill workout. I found a "beginners interval workout" for the treadmill that I tweaked a bit for myself since I don't consider myself a TOTAL beginner so I upped some of the speeds and intervals.

This is the workout I did which gave me a total of 2.77 miles completed and 367 calories burned:

I took a 1 minute walk-break at 22 minutes and 27 minutes but otherwise followed the schedule!

Time Speed Incline
0-1:00 3.2 1
1:00-2:00 3.4 1
2:00-3:00 3.6 1
3:00-4:00 3.8 1
4:00-5:00 4.0 1
5:00-10:00 5.0 1
10:00-11:00 3.5 1
11:00-12:00 4.0 1
12:00-17:00 5.5 1
17:00-18:00 3.5 1
18:00-19:00 4.0 1
19:00-24:00 5.5 1
24:00-25:00 3.5 1
25:00-26:00 4.0 1
26:00-31:00 5.5 1
31:00-33:00 3.5 1
33:00-38:00 cooldown 0

My food wasn't TOO bad - back to tracking tomorrow though!

Yesterday I googled "mom fitness blog" and I came up with dozens of listings of blogs by either former athletes that run marathons and half marathons on a continuous basis or mom's that are certified trainers and real fitness fanatics - but what about the regular moms? The moms that have never been a super athlete, that have to juggle working full-time with raising their kids and fitting in fitness? The moms that have to meal plan and sometimes come up with meals on the fly? That's where my blog fits in. I'm just a regular mom, trying to get fit and lose a couple of pounds before my July wedding.

I restarted P90X on Sunday. I had already completed 2 1/2 weeks of the program in March before we moved and then it got put on the back burner. Sunday I figured I would just pick back up on Week 3. Boy was I wrong - it was TOUGH! Fortunately the 1st, 2nd and 3rd weeks are all the same series of workouts each day so I rescheduled my workout calendar and made Sunday's workout Week 1 of P90X. P90X is a 13 week program and if I stick to the schedule this time around I'll have finished 12 weeks before my wedding day!

So Sunday's workout was Chest & Back/Ab Ripper X

I got through the whole thing using my 8 lb weights and a resistance band (instead of the pull-up bar). Hopefully by the end of the program I'll be able to do a full pull-up!

Monday I didn't do any workout. I stayed up late Sunday night and then Jamie and I were going to go for a walk in our new neighborhood after work but it looked like it was going to rain.

Yesterday's workout was the P90X Plyometrics dvd

I LOVE this dvd - it's right up my alley as far as dvds - it's a tough hour of cardio that will definitely get you sweating. All the exercises have some form of jumping or squatting so I stuck with the woman doing the low impact version and some of the movs I even had to modify because I was feeling a little knee discomfort.

I stopped by a new store in our neighborhood on the way home - it's a "Natural Market". It was basically the expensive cousin to Trader Joe's. I ended up picking up a few cooking sauces with no added flavorings/colorings to try out in the next couple of weeks and a little piece of wild caught salmon that I had for dinner.

Turkey sausage

So I bought this sausage for a change from the Butterball turkey bacon I usually always cook for weekend breakfasts - and I really wasn't a fan. I baked it - which was a little odd to me but it was just okay tastewise. I'll stick with the turkey bacon.

Fruit season

Mmmm... LOVE the warmer months. Here's a bowl of fresh fruit I picked up from Whole Foods after my Dr's appt on my way back to the office!

Earth Day

Each year my office building has an Earth Day breakfast for the tenants. Here is the plate of a lil bit of everything I had. The cup in the center is yogurt with berries and granola on top of it.

Trader Joes Chicken Sausage

Picture of the previous post's meal.

Chicken sausage

This chicken sausage from Trader Joes was really good. Last week when I was trying to be healthy and creative at the same time I cooked one and added it to some whole grain pasta and broccoli and tomatoes. It was good but I needed some sort of light sauce to accompany it. Would definitely buy again!

No ipod at the gym. Grrr

Monday I forgot to bring my heart rate monitor to the gym. It wasn't so bad as I've done that run/walk enough to have a pretty good estimate of my calories burned. But Tuesday when I forgot my ipod... Ugh!!  Luckily it was a "walking" day on the treadmill. I tend to not exert myself as much when I'm watching the tvs so I increased the Level from 6 to 7 and the speed from 4 to 4.2 and the time from 30 to 35 min and set it on random. I still watched Judge Alex & Judge Judy but I worked really hard. So hard in fact that I WALKED the same 2.6 miles at lunch that I RAN/WALKEDthe previous day and it only took me 5 minutes longer to walk it!
I had planned to get a P90X leg workout in after work but then I had an unexpected errand to run for the kids when I picked them up which put me in a foul mood because it was something their dad should have done. We got home late and then it was the mad rush to feed them & help with math homework.
My food for the day was the same as Monday except for dinner. There wasn't enough leftover spaghetti for me & Jamie too so I warmed up one of the Trader Joe frozen pasta dishes I picked up. It said there were "about" 3 one cup servings but really I just barely squeezed out 2. It was just okay to me. Nothing to write home about. Meatless. Lots of peppers. I had some mixed veggies to go with it and because I was still hungry afterwards I helped myself to a big bowl of ice cream - totally disregarding the low calorie Jello Temptations that were in the refrigerator. Oh well... there's always tomorrow right?
I did see an interesting treadmill interval workout I'm eager to try today at lunch.

Yesterday at lunch I managed to knock out 2.6 miles running (with a couple of walk breaks)  I had been running at 5mph and yesterday increased it to 5.2. I didn't get in my P90X legs dvd but I did bring all my food to work for breakfast, lunch & snacks but the leftover Easter candy beckoned me after dinner.
Breakfast was egg beaters with laughing cow cheese & turkey bacon mixed in and an apple
Pre gym snack was the usual - 100 cal pack of almonds & a light string cheese.
Lunch was 2/3 cups of Old El Paso Tortilla Stuffer that I found in the pantry that was about to expire along with the last of the salvageable iceberg lettuce from Easter. I put a little salsa on top of it & a little of my plain nonfat greek yogurt & mixed it all together. The rest of the yogurt I ate mixed with fresh strawberry slices and a Splenda.
Dinner I overate the right portion. I initially measured out what I should eat but then went back for seconds. I had whole grain pasta with Ragu & ground turkey and peas. After dinner was more of a downslide. I had a Cadbury Creme Egg (my 1st of the season), a Chocolate Peeps and a serving of jelly beans.
I really would have liked to get an early evening workout in but the house was so hot (it got to 90 degrees for the daytime high) and then I got busy with packing lunches, laundry & prepping my clothes for work today.
I still couldn't wake up for a morning P90X workout today but I'm really determined to get one in this evening!

Flexibilty - NOT!!

Today was "supposed" to be Yoga day on my P90X schedule. I couldn't get either of the 2 dvds set up to work so I had to use my laptop. I was frustrated because I felt off schedule so by the time the dvd actually started & I was ready for the workout - I only lasted 13 minutes of the 90. I didn't like it at all. I'm not much of a yoga fan to begin with but I thought Tony Horton looked silly in his yoga leggings & I just found the moves too difficult for someone like me who is not in the least bit flexible!
I stopped the dvd & dug through my boxes & found a good PILATES dvd I'm going to substitute for P90X yoga days for now - until I get stronger.  It is "Pilates Beginning Mat Workout" with Ana Caban. I like her instruction & her voice is calming - unlike Tony's.
I followed the beginner student, Tara - and was able to complete the whole 25 minute dvd. It really did show me how much work I need to do to increase my flexibility & core strength! Definitely keeping this dvd in the rotation for a little while!

Saturday Cheat Day

Yesterday was my "breakfast with the kids" day.  They always want to go to Dunkin Donuts & I'm so sick of their food. Their egg white sandwiches are dry & awful to me. I splurged and had their version of the egg mcmuffin. It was just ok.

I had lunch with a dear, longtime friend. We went to a burger place she chose near Baltimore called Gino's. The place was along the lines of a Five Guys but the food wasn't as good.  I had a bacon cheeseburger & fries but I sure ate it all!

After dinner I continued driving up the road to Delaware to meet my sweetie who was staying up there for the weekend for a work function.  We hung out with some of his co-workers at the VFW and I drank way too much Captain Morgan & Diet Cokes.  We came back to the hotel & I devoured a whole Snickers bar in mere seconds. Then we went down to the bar & ordered wings & a meat/cheese/cracker platter for "dinner".

Friday the 13th

I have to start packing/bringing my breakfasts to work. Today I ordered from the old work standby - Corner Bakery. I had the eggwhite, bacon & cheese panini thin with a side of fruit.
Lunch was an office event with co-workers. We went to The Hamilton. I checked out the menu online ahead of time & knew it was going to be a challenge.  It was a fancy shmancy place so no pic. I settled on the salmon burger (no bun) & sweet potato fries. I declined the alcohol & appetizers everyone else had. I had a small piece of bread with butter; no dessert, 2 glasses of water & a diet coke.
After work I went to the mall to use my Livingsocial deal at The Body Shop that was getting ready to expire. Then I wandered into good ole Trader Joes! Dinner was some TJ eggwhite salad on wheat bread and some veggies with TJ hummus.
I didn't get a workout in but must do so this weekend!

Skinny Days

Don't you love those days when you get on the scale and the number is lower than you expected - in fact lower than it's been for weeks! Granted - I really didn't eat much yesterday but I'm so psycho about the scale it felt good to see that number! I dress better (even on jeans Friday for work) when I FEEL smaller. Now the challenge is to keep the scale number there!

Food journal

I reactivated my Sparkpeople account. I'm going to run an experiment for the next 30 days and journal simultaneously with WW & Sparkpeople to see which one is more helpful & convenient for me. I've read so many success stories of people losing weight by counting calories - afterall, isn't weight loss generally about calories in versus calories out?
