Valentine's Day and then Flu Bug

Last I checked in was Valentine's Day. Hubby's reenlistment was that morning. He's on the right taking his oath. I was at work but he was able to send me this picture. 

One of my co-worker friends had brought each of us ladies half a dozen tulips to work that the receptionist put in vases for us.  Another co-worker had left us all a little Valentine's candy on our desks and another co-worker handed out Valentine's signed by her. I felt a little bad because this is the second time I had received thoughtful items from my co-workers for a holiday and I hadn't done anything for them. The first time was Christmas. I need to get better with the whole co-worker holiday thing.

My boss wanted to have a Valentine's Day office lunch at Founding Farmers in DC. I declined, telling her I was going to go to the gym for lunch. She told me to go ahead and go to the gym early and then still come to lunch since the reservation wasn't until 1:45. I got in a good 25 minute HIIT workout from Fitness Blender and then a 10 minute walk/run on the treadmill.

At the Founding Farmers lunch I tried not to overdo it because I knew I was going to be having a delicious Valentine's Seafood Dinner with my hubby that night. My co-workers ordered a ton of appetizers for the table. I had half a deviled egg and a small piece of bread. For my entree I stuck with the following salad:

Late Harvest – 
Spinach, Belgian Endive, Balsamic Onions, Apples, Egg, Bacon, Blue Cheese, Barrel-Aged Sherry Vinaigrette 

It was good and I was glad I hadn't stuffed myself.  By the time we had finished eating and walked back to work, the special Valentine's Dinner I had ordered through our building's concierge had arrived. It was a Seafood Dinner for 2 through Phillip's Seafood.

 Our evening started with a little wine while we cooked.

Check out that Valentine's Dinner spread! Everything was delicious! We couldn't even finish it all. Note to self - we need to get some nice little bowls for our melted butter next time.

 The next morning I woke up and got in a ChaLean Extreme workout - Lean Circuit 2. I knew I needed to get in an early workout because I was taking a half-day off from work so hubby and I could go up to Delaware for our last little weekend get-away before he deploys.

We got up to Delaware pretty early and despite the fact the Hilton messed up our hotel reservation, we had a great first night. We went to Delaware Park Casino.  The Craps tables were super crowded so we stuck to the slots. I ended up for the evening with my winnings - until we wandered back around to the Craps table and squeezed in... Not pretty.

The next morning was when the beginning of my flu started. I woke up with this nasty cough and just didn't feel good. We went to my hubby's brother's new place to check it out and then went to lunch. I didn't have much of an appetite but I did manage to eat some potato skins from Champps. I sure wish I had an appetite though because the burgers looked delicious.

After lunch we tried our luck at Dover Downs casino. Not much luck there. The place was seriously packed too. We didn't stay long. We stopped on the way to the hotel and loaded up on some cold medicine for me before hubby got me back to the hotel for dinner via room service and then some much needed sleep.

Sunday morning I woke up feeling awful. We drove back to Maryland and I climbed immediately into bed. Hubby took care of everything to ensure a smooth drop off since the kids would be back with us at 6pm that evening from their dad's. Hubby and the kids hung out all night and then all day Monday. He even dropped them off at school for the first time on Tuesday morning. I went to the Dr. on Tuesday and found out I did in fact have the flu and couldn't go to work until Thursday. I had to contact the kids' dad and see if he would keep them at his house until Thursday. I really didn't want them to catch the flu and I still hope they don't. Same goes for hubby too since he's deploying in just a matter of days now.

I did go back to work Thursday and pick up the kiddos but I haven't resumed my workouts yet. I still have this little nagging cough. I rescheduled my upcoming workouts to resume this Monday though. I'm off from work on Tuesday and Wednesday. I'll be headed up to Delaware again with hubby for his final few days before deployment. He leaves Thursday morning. I've been trying to be strong since this is my second deployment but I lost it a little this morning and cried. This is my last weekend with him until May - my husband, my best friend, my love.

Who schedules a 7:15 am dentist appointment? This girl! Why? I guess to torture myself. I think six months ago when I scheduled it I was reasoning with myself that if I scheduled an appointment at 7:15, I would be done by 7:45 and I could still be at work by 9. Well that's all noble and fine and dandy but I do have sick leave at my job AND because we're Union - part of our bargaining agreement allows us two hours at the beginning or end of the day to leave for appointments without counting against our leave. So today when I was scheduling August's appointment you better believe I scheduled it for 8 am! On another note - I still don't have any cavities. 44 years old and cavity free!

I finally got back to the gym during my lunch break. I did Week 4 Day 2 of the Couch to 5K program. It was tough - but I still managed to run every single interval (it's up to 5 minutes for some of them) - although I was pretty slow.

Initially when I got to the gym at 11:45 it was closed. I went back upstairs to my office and worked for 15 minutes - determined to get my workout in!

After my workout I ran into two of my co-workers heading out to Jimmy John's to pick up sandwiches. I didn't pack my lunch today so they offered to pick me up a sandwich. Off the top of my head I blurted out that I'd take the Vegetarian sandwich because I'm not really familiar with the menu. Well after I chowed down the whole entire thing I looked up their nutrition information from their website. Yowsers - what I thought was a healthy choice - actually ended up having 674 calories and 38 grams of fat! Even the Tuna sandwich and the BLT had less calories and fat than the veggie sandwich. Note to self - DEFINITELY check out the nutritional information BEFORE consuming restaurant food.

To level out the day I had steamed veggies and I measured out one cup of my pasta for dinner and didn't even go back for seconds! I still ended up under my calorie goal for the day which was surprising.

The good and the bad

Monday morning I got up bright and early and did an old school Tae Bo dvd.

I knew I had to get a workout in 1st thing in the morning because I had to go pick the kids up from their dad's house to bring them to the dentist for their 6 month check-up. I somehow managed to schedule the appointment for the wrong week when I did it 6 months ago.

I assumed I would be late to work so I wouldn't workout during lunch and then I wasn't going to workout after work so hubby and I could hang out together and catch up. So I knew I just had to suck it up and get a workout in 1st thing in the morning - even though the dentist appointment was at 8am!

Hubby and I played tag-team snooze button for quite awhile before I finally got up. I'm glad I did though. It was a great cardio workout! I forgot how good Tae Bo can be for getting my heart pumping. I was trying my hardest to keep up with most of the moves and ended up burning 300 calories in 42 minutes - I'll take it! 

I had packed all my meals and snacks for the work day and I even came home and cooked hubby and I a healthy dinner - baked tilapia in panko bread crumbs and sauteed spinach (cooked in coconut oil). I did have some Stove Top stuffing with it and yes - I did measure it out with a measuring cup.

Tuesday morning I was so sore from Sunday's and Monday's workouts that I just couldn't get up to do any sort of workouts! I did go through my closet with the extra time that I had and I took more care picking out my clothes for work. I found some sweaters that had dry cleaning tags on them from 2008, 2009 and 2010 which obviously hadn't been worn since then. I tried them on and two of them ended up in the donate pile - either they've shrunk in length or designers are making clothes longer these days. I really do need to go through the rest of my closet and take out the clothes I just don't wear anymore. Sounds like a project to do during hubby's deployment...

After work I went to the grocery store. That's a great day and time to go. It wasn't crowded at all! I tackled our grocery list from Cozi and maybe only picked up a couple of things that weren't on it. I most definitely did not pick up this item I happened upon:

I have no idea what this is and I have no desire to try it. 

After the grocery store I went and picked up the Valentine's gift I'm giving to hubby. We hadn't really talked about whether or not we were exchanging gifts so I just picked up a little something that I'm sure he'll like. By the time I got home though - I was famished. 

I tore through two Nestle chocolate chip peanut butter cookies that were sitting on the kitchen counter in a baggie - left over from the weekend. Next I finished off the last couple of bites of Suddenly Salad my daughter had made over the weekend. Yep - ate it right out of the container - practically standing in the refrigerator. Then I started cooking dinner for Wednesday night (when the kids come over) while watching old episodes of Castle on the dvr. I didn't feel like cooking my scheduled meal of mahi-mahi burger because it was so late by then so I melted some shredded cheese on top of some Tostitos and put salsa and low fat sour cream on top. Way to go on the bad decisions made out of hunger.

I did log everything in MyFitness Pal to my credit. I was over on my calories of course because I hadn't worked out on top of a pig out but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Total day's calories was 1,682.

The saying is so true - Failing to plan is a plan to fail.

Weekend update

I did it. I stayed true to MyFitness Pal and tracked and submitted each day's food and activity for the whole weekend! Saturday was WAY over though - but at least I did it!

Saturday's summary

Hubby was gone Saturday morning. I was supposed to be with him but my friend who was going to watch the kiddos for me was a no call/no show. He was at a pre-deployment seminar for the deploying members and their families. 

I did get some stuff done around the house though. Around 2pm my daughter asked me if she and my son could go to the movies with a couple of their friends from school. Eeeek!! It was their first "movie date" (boys and girls) with no parents in attendance. I am officially getting old!

The kids saw a 4pm show and I picked them up at 6pm. The theater was just far enough away that it didn't make sense for me to drive all the way home while I waited for them so I drove across the street to the shopping center. I grabbed a grande skinny vanilla latte from Starbucks and called hubby to chat for a bit. Then I called and struck out on my attempts to catch up with my mom (she was on her way to a funeral), my sister (she was out with my nephew looking for a laptop for him), my dad (I was trying to find out if we're still going on a cruise at the end of March), and my friend from New Jersey to see if the snow storm Nemo had caused her any problems.

Since no one was available to talk to - I wandered around and did some window shopping. I did outstanding at restraining myself from buying a lot of unnecessary but very cute items! I did walk away with a much needed Victoria's Secrets bag to replace some worn-out undergarments.

After I picked the kids up from the movie, we drove home and met up with hubby. The four of us went to the base for some bowling and pizza.

Sunday was homework/pajamas day for the kiddos. Normally I get sucked into the Sunday pajama day too but not this time. I had caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror flexing my arm muscles for my son while we were joking around and I actually impressed myself with the progress I could see! I got the kids situated with breakfast and starting their homework before I put on my workout clothes. I did my ChaLean Extreme workout. I have now moved onto the Lean Phase (Phase 3) - which for me is using lighter weights but for more repetitions. And then afterwards I did ZWOW #3. 

After homework and workout were complete - the four of us rented "Here Comes the Boom" On Demand. The kids and I had seen it in the theater when hubby was working one day but he hadn't seen it. I have to say - it's just as funny the second time around. Kevin James is a riot!

Afterwards it was time to bring the kids to their dad's house. I came home and made dinner and we watched The Grammys.

I feel like it was a busy and productive weekend. I'm back on track and ready to tackle this week!

I am a phony

This morning I logged onto MyFitness Pal as I have done every morning for the past 40 days. How do I know this information? Because MyFitness Pal made a note in my news feed that I've logged on for 40 days. All my MyFitness Pal friends can see this and then they comment or give me a thumbs up for this "accomplishment". 

The thing is - I log onto MyFitness Pal every single morning out of habit, with the intentions of recording my full day's food, exercise and water - but the truth is - I haven't actually completed and submitted a whole day's worth of activity in weeks. I keep my diary open so that others can view it and supposedly keep me honest and accountable. But I've learned that if I don't "submit" my final diary entries at the end of the day - nothing come up in anyone's news feed and then no one has any reason to view my entries for the day.

So although I may be "beating the system" - I am actually just cheating myself.

It is time for me to get real with myself. I have a short-term goal (to fit comfortably in the little black dress I have picked out for hubby's award reception in 3 weeks) and a little-longer term goal (to be fit and happy with my body by the time hubby come back from deployment in 12 weeks). Hubby leaves in less than 3 weeks :-(

This past week I was sick with a cold and didn't workout. The 1st part of the week was totally legit that I didn't workout but towards the end of the week I feel like I could have at least done some light workouts but I didn't. I was lazy and unmotivated.

This morning though I woke up early and re-planned my workout calendar for the rest of February and into March. Tomorrow I will restart ChaLean Extreme with the Lean Phase. Wednesday I will restart the C25K running plan where I left off - at Week 4 Day 2. Today I will restart journaling 100% in MyFitness Pal AND submit it.

This week was a bust


I hate week's like this. I was sick with a cold all week and didn't work out one time. I halfway tracked my food while I was eating healthy and then when I wasn't eating healthy I just stopped tracking. 

Usually during my lunch hours I work out. This week I spent that hour cleaning out/sorting old emails, staying up-to-date and subscribing to new blogs and then deleting blogs I'm no longer interested in reading. I'm pretty much over reading  the "perfect blogs" where the blogger always shows the perfect thing - daily exercise, home cooked healthy meals for every meal, etc. I'm more drawn to the regular blogger - usually those that haven't been blogging for long. I get motivation from seeing other people similar to me that struggle to fit it all in - husband, kids, work, exercise, meals, socializing... I refuse to spend anymore of my time reading things that don't relate to me and my circumstance. 

I'm also hoping this is a turning point in my blogging life. I want to blog more. I think it is such a great means of journaling and documenting my life. My kids are growing up so fast and I can't believe I've been married almost 7 months now! 

Hubby is getting ready to deploy again at the end of the month and I'm going to use that time to nurture this lil blog of mine. Until then - I've started jotting down future blog topics as I think of them and I'm going to try to put in more effort to blogging more often.

Last Wednesday was my dinner night with the kids. I made their favorite - spaghetti tacos.

They saw it on a TV show (iCarly) awhile back and have always wanted to try them so last month was the 1st time I let them try it. It was a hit with them. On "spaghetti taco" nights hubby and I EITHER have spaghetti OR tacos. Although hubby did give one a try last week.

Thursday I got in one of my  two-a-day workout days! I progressed on to Week 4 Day 1 of C25K and I was able to keep up with all of the running intervals. I did have to slow my speed down a little bit but to me it was an accomplishment that I finished all the running intervals. I was very proud of myself. Hubby got home from work late that night so I squeezed in a ChaLean Extreme dvd. It was my last weight lifting dvd of the Push series. This week I will start the Lean dvds.

Friday I knew I was not going to get in a lunchtime or an evening workout so I got up early and did the ChaLean Extreme Burn Intervals dvd. It was a real struggle to get up and get started - so much so that I didn't have time to do the Abs part of the dvd because I hit the snooze button so much.

I left work an hour early to drive up to Delaware to meet hubby. He has to work one weekend a month and when he does he stays in a hotel up there rather than having to drive back and forth all weekend long since he already does it all weekday long. We ate dinner and then went to Delaware Park to play some penny slots. I was running through my money pretty quickly and getting discouraged. We walked by the craps table and somehow between hubby and the dealer I was convinced to learn the game. I started off with $100 that hubby gave to me and the dealer walked me through a lot of the rules and bets etc. Then hubby and some other people started playing and we were having a good run of it. I got up to over $250. And then like a true gambler - I gambled it all away (of course after giving hubby back his $100). We spent 3 hours at the craps table and rolled into bed around 2:30 am. Poor hubby had to be at work at 7. I slept in til about 9:30 and then threw on clothes and rushed downstairs to grab some breakfast from the free buffet before it closed. It wasn't the healthiest of breakfasts for me. I sat, ate, and caught up on a lot of my google reader blogs.

Then I headed back to up my room and lounged around - reading and watching TV until late afternoon. I finally got up and showered and dressed and went across the street to wander around TJ Maxx. That TJ Maxx had some very nice handbags, dresses and home stuff. I really do want to start decorating our house this year and giving it more of our own personal touch.

After hubby got off of work we went across the street to the dive bar. They were having a promotion party there for some people he works with. After the previous night - I really didn't feel like drinking too much so I just had a couple of Bud Light Limes. We didn't stay there too long. We were back at the hotel by 9 where we ordered dinned and went to sleep.

Sunday I woke up at 9:30 and saw that I had missed the free breakfast buffet. I lounged around in bed for awhile because I felt like I was coming down with a cold. I checked out and headed back home to Maryland at 1. I had to get the grocery list together - and it was a big one since we hadn't gone the previous week. I also tend to wander the store when I'm husband-less and kid-less at the grocery store and this was the result:

I came home and unloaded the car and started the Super Bowl cooking - all sorts of bad-for-you snack items that are a must when you're watching the Super Bowl. The kids were actually dropped off on-time and we had a nice evening of eating and watching the Baltimore Ravens win the Super Bowl! Once again I wasn't overly impressed with the commercials this year. And I honestly wasn't impressed with the half-time performance by Beyonce either. I felt like I'd seen it, heard it all before.

I had an exercise plan all mapped out for this week but because I'm feeling congested I'll have to see how much of it I can actually get done. Definitely not the way I wanted to start the month.
