Me vs the scale

Thursday night I finally updated my iPhone to iOS 8. It literally took 12 hours. With no phone. No social media. Talk about withdrawal! Now I'm trying to figure out some of the new features. 

Thursday morning I weighed myself and I was up .2 for the week. Friday morning for kicks I weighed myself again since I had gone out to eat on Wednesday night. 

The scale is such a mind game with me! But I am glad to see 3.4 pounds of my holiday weight gain gone!

I didn't work out Thursday or Friday. There goes another #workitout100 streak. I can't tell you how many times I've started and restarted that Challenge but I'm determined to somehow complete 100 days in a row of some type of physical activity. Today I start. Again.

This Year So Far

This year I had every intention of blogging more often and so far that hasn't panned out for me.

It may have to do with the fact that I just have a ton going on so far this year.

We're buying our first house together! It's still being built but it should be done in March. We are also downsizing with the new house. Currently we have a pretty big single family home and now we'll be buying a decent size townhouse. We figured that since we currently have entire rooms that are unfurnished and the teens will be headed off to college in less than 4 years that we may as well look for something smaller. Besides - I HATE to clean. Hubby doesn't mind it so much - but the house we're currently in is a lot for him to keep up with. Hubby has been doing a good job with sorting through his miscellaneous boxes in the basement, but I need to get started with my stuff - sorting, donating, throwing out, etc. all to get ready for PACKING!

Hubby got a new job! He doesn't start until May 1st so in the meantime he's taking classes two times a week in the evening.

Then there are the teens and the normal stuff that I do to keep them fed, clothed, entertained, you know... the usual.

All this while trying to take off the last of these holiday pounds I've put on.

I reset my weight on MyFitness Pal to my post-holiday weight (which also happens to be my highest ever weight) so that I can get an accurate weight loss total for the year.

I swear I've slowly put on more and more weight since my last birthday in September. I hate to admit but I think some of it has to do with my age and hormones which also seems to make it even harder to take off. This year I really need to experiment with my diet I think. I have the exercising thing pretty much under control - it's my darn willpower and trigger foods that are my downfall.

And on a final note - last week I got to hang out with these ladies. We've been friends for almost 30 years!

Riding the DC Metro

THIS terrifies me. 

On Monday a Metro train suddenly stopped, went dark and then filled with smoke while it was underground with passengers aboard. One woman died and more than 80 other people were taken to the hospital for treatment.

I ride the DC metro system twice a day every day that I go to work. I cannot imagine being trapped on a smoke filled train car for almost an hour. That had to have been one of the worst things those passengers could experience - stuck underground, unable to breathe and not knowing when help was actually going to arrive.

It's easy for so many people not in the situation to question why the passengers didn't force the doors open to escape. I've heard various responses to that - one is that it is illegal to disboard a train unless you are instructed to. Another response had to do with the risk of electrocution by walking on the wrong track.

I don't know exactly what I would have done if I would have been in that exact situation but it does make me think to myself more often about "worse case scenarios" and what my reaction to certain situations would be. 

It's hard enough working in DC just a block away from the White House not to worry about all the crazy people out there looking to do harm to the President or to the White House.  But now I also have to worry about what could happen on my way IN to work.

It really makes me want to stop on the way home and buy a winning lottery ticket so I can just "retire" and escape to a beach somewhere.

Football Food Frenzy

This was an awful food weekend for me. Most weekends usually are but this one was worse than usual because there were football playoff games on both days almost all day! So that means I sat on my booty all day and ate... unhealthy foods.

I had weighed in on Thursday morning and was feeling good about myself because I had lost 1.2 pounds of my 3.6 holiday weight gain.

I felt so good that on Friday night the teens and I stopped and grabbed Chipotle for dinner.   

Saturday morning I woke up bright and early and took myself to an 8am Spin class. Then I came home and baked up these Trader Joe muffins "for the teens" in my attempt to start clearing out the holiday related items from the pantry.

I spent the rest of the day running errands with my final stop being at Wegman's to grab "football watching food". The only healthy item to end up in my cart was a package of baby carrots that didn't even get opened.

I went nuts in that store. I picked up a frozen pizza, potato skins and mozzarella sticks. I also bought coleslaw, macaroni salad, chicken salad and a pasta salad - all from the deli counter. And it was just the three of us watching the games together - me and my twin teens. Hubby had to work the weekend and wasn't even going to be home.

Not only did I eat a little bit of everything (without tracking any of it) on Saturday - but I did it again and grazed on the leftovers throughout the day on Sunday.

Needless to say - the outfit I had picked out for work today was a no go. It was a little too tight and I had to make a last minute shirt change to disguise my ever-growing muffin top.

It also doesn't help my situation that I seem to have injured myself during Saturday's Spin class. There was a move that we were standing on our bikes at the same time as we were doing push-ups from the handle bars. My form must have been totally off because I woke up on Sunday morning with a sore neck. The only workout I was able to manage on Sunday was a 30 minute REALLY slow treadmill walk which stinks because I had just restarted ChaLean Extreme and Sunday was going to be the start of my new running program.

All I can do is try to stay as active as possible without making my neck worse and focus most definitely on my food choices.

Cleaning House

Last year I subscribed to Rachel Ray's magazine because I received an offer in the mail that I couldn't resist. Alas, it's time to let this subscription expire. I've never actually watched her show or looked at her recipes. Her magazine is full of recipes WITHOUT nutritional information. THAT doesn't work for me. I like to see my calories and fat content in a recipe before I even decide if it's worthy of being torn out of a magazine. One less magazine I'll have to worry about in the future.
